A-DAY Update

Posted on April 20 2014 by @whoke10 in AU UPDATE

Gus Malzhan made good on his promise to give the fans attending Auburn's spring game a show and what a show it was. The blue team, mainly starters beat the white team 58-3 in front of 70,642 fans at Jordan-Hare Saturday at 2 pm. The rest of the nation got a peek at how good these Tigers can be with the A-Day game nationally televised by ESPN.

Nick Marshall was fantastic throwing the ball Saturday connecting with Auburn's dynamic receivers. Duke Williams looked as good as advertised using his big body to go up and make highlight reel catches and Sammy Coates looked just as good with a one handed touchdown grab that would have made the sports center top 10. (RS/FR) Tony Stevens who is 6'4" also had a big game with two touchdowns himself. This Auburn WR core is as talented as it's ever been, it has the big bodied guys who can go up and get it and there are plenty of speed guys like Quan Bray, Marcus Davis and (FR) Stanton Truitt.

After watching the much improved passing game fans got a glimpse of the race to replace Tre Mason and besides Peyton Barber spraining his ankle on his first run it looks like they will not miss a beat. Corey Grant only needed five touches to go for 119 yards and Cameron Artis-Payne looked tough as nails running through the tackles. With 5 star Roc Thomas and 4 star Kamryn Pettway coming soon this backfield looks as good as last season.

We didn't see much out of the defensive stars due to nagging injuries, coach Johnson didn't want to risk real injury for a scrimmage. Several guys like Cameron Toney, Rudy Ford and new corner Travon Reed got some needed real- game type experience.

Malzhan made an impression with fans, the media and the top flight talent watching from the sidelines, guys looking to choose where they play college football. Auburn landed two commits Saturday flipping 4 star (S) Ben Edwards from Ohio State and 3 star (OL) Bailey Sharp, who had 27 family members in Malzhans office when he made his choice. Nearly every visitor left with Auburn as their #1 school including 5 star (LB) Jeffery Holland who is the Tigers #1 defensive target.

The 2014 A-Day game really showed the Auburn family and the rest of the college football world that Auburn under Malzhan is here to stay and if Gus and Rhett gave defensive coordinators headaches last season this year they better have plenty of Advil on hand because with the passing game as lethal as the rushing game this offense will be next to impossible to stop.

OTHER NOTES.........

5 star (QB) Torrance Gibson wasn't able to make the trip but AU is still one of his favorites.

4 star (OT) Kaleb Kim moved his decision date up to April 25th after attending the Auburn spring game, it will be AU of UGA. UGA was the leader but after this weekend we give AU a 55% chance of landing him, UGA 45%-since committed
