Mincy charged with possession of marijuana

Posted on June 28 2014 by @whoke10 in AU UPDATE

For the second straight year the Auburn football team has one of it's brightest stars in the secondary arrested for marijuana possession right before the start of the season. Last year the loss of (DB) D. McNeal was felt during the season as the Tigers secondary struggled at times, if Mincy is lost for the year it will have a similar impact this upcoming season because depth is the main issue.

This is a big blow for an already thin group in the secondary, defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson will have to adapt and side with youth as Mincy was a veteran with SEC experience. Auburn will have no choice now but to play some fresh faces, fall camp will be huge for the young talent at the position to earn the trust of Melvin Smith and Charlie Harbison

Malzhan and the staff have been recruiting well at the defensive back position but there isn't much game experience in that unit. Auburn will have a few options with former (WR) Travon Reed now at corner and a host of highly rated youngsters who are eager to prove they are ready for SEC football.

As for Jonathan Mincy, this is a bad situation and hopefully he will make better choices from now on. He was primed to take on the leadership role in the secondary left open with the departure of Chris Davis to the NFL.

Judging by the few similar situations prior, it seems like a forgone conclusion that Malzhan will release Mincy from the Auburn football team. If this indeed is the case, hopefully Mincy will be able to take a similar pathway as McNeal and get on at one of the smaller schools in the state for his senior season.
